We offer a wide range of driving resources, information, and guidance to help you learn efficiently and correctly. Whether you’re just getting started or preparing for your next steps, you’ll find helpful tips and advice-from applying for your provisional licence and passing your theory and hazard perception tests, to knowing what to expect in your very first lesson with an instructor.
Getting Started with Driving Lessons
What You Need Before You Begin
Before you can start your driving lessons, you must have a Provisional Driving Licence. If you don’t already have one, here’s how to apply:
- You can apply online via the DVLA website.
- Alternatively, you can pick up a D1 application form from your local Post Office.
- Once completed, send your form to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Important Requirements :
- You must be at least 17 years old to learn to drive a car.
- If you are disabled and receive Mobility Allowance, you can start at 16 years old.
- Once your application is processed, your Provisional Licence will be issued, and you’ll be ready to start your lessons.
Your First Driving Lesson : What to Expect
- Moving off and stopping
- Turn in the road and other beginner manoeuvres
- These early steps will help you build confidence and control behind the wheel.
- Once you’ve gained control, you’ll move on to road procedures-starting with simple junctions and gradually progressing to more complex traffic situations.
Your Learning Journey
- Each learner is given a personal logbook, which outlines a structured step-by-step training syllabus.
- Your Instructor will guide you through each topic, initially giving full instruction.
- As you grow in confidence, they will begin to prompt you instead of instructing, gradually allowing you to take more control.
- The final goal is independent driving before moving on to the next skill or topic.
- Understanding the theory behind each lesson is just as important as the practical side—your Instructor will help you connect both for effective learning.
